Ly Son or Cu Lao Cham: choose by your starting point and available days
Ly Son and Cu Lao Cham are not interchangeable beach stops. For travelers already in Hoi An, the mainland approach to Cu Lao Cham usually fits the local travel area more naturally. Ly Son involves planning around Sa Ky in Quang Ngai and rewards a different interest in volcanic landscapes, garlic-growing communities and maritime heritage. Neither island should be sold as a guaranteed calm-water escape.

Start with the mainland connection
Write down your real starting point, your next booked destination and the days you can spare. A Hoi An-based traveler with a short window may prefer exploring the Cu Lao Cham option first, subject to the actual boat arrangement. For Ly Son, include the land transfer to Sa Ky and the return, not just time on the sea. Do not assume an advertised direct Da Nang–Ly Son sailing is currently operating.
Choose the experience rather than a beach ranking
Ly Son’s volcanic cliffs, To Vo arch, working garlic fields and community history are strong reasons to choose it when they match your interests. Cu Lao Cham belongs to a different island and coastal-community setting near Hoi An. Ask what a proposed excursion actually includes; a title mentioning islands or coral does not establish swimming safety, clear water, guided snorkeling or a quiet beach.
Consider how much flexibility the itinerary has
If you have several days and accept possible boat disruption, a Ly Son stay can allow separate main-island areas and a conditional Dao Be visit. With only a narrow gap between fixed mainland bookings, the simpler approach may be to avoid adding a remote sea connection at all. Compare cancellation terms and recovery options for both destinations, rather than claiming one route never has weather problems.
Make a decision your group can use
Choose Ly Son for the specific landscape and cultural experience when the extra mainland travel is worthwhile. Consider Cu Lao Cham when Hoi An is already your base and the confirmed excursion fits your available day. For children, older travelers or limited mobility, compare actual boarding, vehicles, room arrangements and activity choices. Current fares, departure times and visitor conditions need separate verification; none is assumed in this comparison.
